Portuguese farmstay

If battling for the best spot on the beach fills you with dread, head inland. Kids will love the Quinta Vale de Marmelos in Alentejo, eastern Portugal. The farm, run by British expats, has B&B rooms as well as self-catering cottages, tucked amidst olive and orange groves. You can splash in the pool, ride the tractor or collect freshly-laid eggs.

The Alentejo is a two-hour drive from Lisbon near the Spanish town of Badajoz. A two-bedroom cottage at the farmhouse costs £330 for a week in summer. Cots and highchairs are available.
